How To Keep An Upholstered Bed Clean Longer ?

There’s no denying that an upholstered bed frame adds elegance to any bedroom, and these plush headboards are super comfy too. However, upholstered beds are more difficult to clean than wooden or metal beds. But don’t let that put you off: upholstered beds are still a great option for bed frames, and you can clean them in just six easy steps.

Step 1: Know Your Code

Before you start cleaning an upholstered bed, you need to understand how to clean it. Most upholstered items include a cleaning code, usually on the tag that comes with them. The meaning of these codes is as follows.

  • W: Headboards with this code can be cleaned with a water-based cleaner. Water-based cleaners are among the most widely available and easiest to use cleaners.
  • S: Headboards with this code should be cleaned with waterless solvents or dry cleaned. Be careful when using solvents as they are flammable and toxic.
  • W/S: Headboards with these codes can be cleaned with a water-based cleaner or dry cleaned. In any case, be sure to test the cleanser before using it.
  • X: If the headboard has this code, it can only be cleaned with a vacuum cleaner or a brush. Do not use water-based cleaners or solvents.

If your headboard does not have a code, check the upholstery cleaning code for that fabric or check the cleaner in an inconspicuous area.

Step 2: Remove Dirt

Next, vacuum the surface of the headboard with an upholstery brush or vacuum cleaner to remove dirt and dust from the surface. Be sure to vacuum gently, especially if your bed is covered in more delicate materials.

Step 3: Treat The Stain Locally

Now is the time to tackle the stain. You’ll use a different cleaning solution depending on your cleaning code, but if you have a W or W/S code, create a cleaning solution of one part dish soap and four parts water. Then, dip a clean sponge into the foam mixture and wring out the excess water. Gently dab the sponge on the stain until it disappears. Then dip the other end of the sponge in clean water and pat the cleaned area to “rinse” it. Allow treated area to air dry before proceeding.

Step 4: Clean The Interior

After treating the stain, add two to three parts water to the stain cleaning solution (note: this only works on upholstery marked W or W/S). Dip a clean sponge in it and wring it out until it’s damp, not soggy. Gently move the sponge along the headboard, applying light pressure and working up and down.

Step 5: Rinse off the soap

Take another clean sponge and place it under fresh water, then wring out the excess liquid. Repeat step four using a clean water sponge instead of a soapy sponge. This will remove soap scum from the surface of the upholstered bed.

Step 6: Let Dry

You are almost done! Your final step is to let the cleaned headboard dry. You can let the bed air dry or turn the fan on low to help it. However, do not use hot air to dry an upholstered headboard.

To keep an upholstered bed clean, you need to do two things. First, don’t forget to vacuum or brush regularly. This will prevent dirt and grime from settling and causing discoloration. Second, make a plan to remove stains quickly – fresh stains are easier to remove, and a small coffee spill doesn’t require a deep cleaning of the headboard.
